Dry Docks, The Green, Swinton, Greater Manchester

Underneath these 19th century sheds are 2 18th century dry docks. Dry docks are used for repairing boats, the water can be drained out of them so that the part of the boat normally under water can be accessed. These were built in c1761 by John Gilbert and James Brindley engineers for the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater. They were for barge building and repair. They are possibly the earliest example of dry docks associated with canals. A third dock has long since been filled in.
