East Barracks, Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland

These barracks were built in 1721. They were probably built by the architect Nicholas Hawksmoor, for the Board of Ordnance. They are part of the earliest planned barracks complex in England. They pre-date most English barracks by nearly 80 years. This was because of the need for a permanent garrison on the Scottish border. This property is now in the care of English Heritage (2010).
