The hospital was founded in 1180 to cater for the needs of poor pilgrims to the shrine of St Thomas Becket. 12 pilgrims were accommodated here each night. They were charged 4d for board and lodgings. In the 14th century a chantry chapel was added. After the Dissolution the building was turned into almshouses.
