Engine House Cottage, Park Road, Ashby Wolds, Leicestershire

This house is one of the two engine houses built here in 1805. They were for the Furnace Colliery (coal mine). In 1806 the Furnace or Harvey Pits were sunk 202 yards into the Main Coal. The were two engine houses to service the upcast and downcast shafts. This house still contains the massive wooden beams for supporting the iron pumping beam. If water wasn't pumped from the mine it would flood. It was converted to a workers' hostel in the later 19th century and then to a private house.
