Failsworth, Greater Manchester

The photographer, J M Prest, was interested in industrial buildings and domestic buildings with upper storey workshops. This building has what appear to be shops on the ground floor, living accomodation on the first floor and workshops on the top floor. It is possible to tell that there were workshops from It is possible to tell that they were workshops from because there are far more windows than you would need if the top floor was just attic space. Workshops needed plenty of natural light, particularly before gas or electric lights were common. Another clue to this being an industrial building is the very high arch allowing tall goods wagons to enter. The end wall is covered in interesting advertising posters.
