Former Workhouse, Heymeads Lane, Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire
This building was originally Bishops Stortford Union Workhouse. It was built between 1836 and 1837 at a cost of £9,137. The architect was T L Evans who was clearly influenced by Sampson Kempthorne's hexagon plan model. In 1894 the workhouse became the local infirmary and was renamed Haymeads. This provided 112 beds and a separate fever ward. In 1930 control passed to Hertfordshire County Council and it became Haymeads Institution. During the Second World War a considerable number of Emergency Medical Service huts were built at the site. It later became the Herts and Essex Hospital.
