Freshwater Redoubt, Gate Lane, Freshwater, Isle of Wight

Freshwater Redoubt was a coastal fort built as part of Portsmouth's coastal defence system. The redoubt was constructed between 1856-1863. By 1902 it was armed with two 6 pounder, quick firing weapons. These were for defence against landings on the south west shore of the island. By 1916 the 6 pounder guns had been removed and it was equipped with two 15 pounder Ehrhardt field guns. It was disarmed in 1918.
