Galava Roman Fort, Ambleside, Cumbria

The existence of two forts on the shore of Lake Windermere near Ambleside was proved by excavation by R G Collingwood between 1913 and 1920. The visible remains date from the AD 90s when a timber and turf fort was built over an earlier smaller fort. This in turn was replaced by a larger stone built fort during the reign of Hadrian (AD 117-38). Under Antonius Pius (AD 138-61) the fort was either abandoned or left with greatly reduced man-power. The site was reoccupied during the reign of Marcus Aurelius (AD 161-80) and remained garrisoned until the late 4th century. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2010) and managed by the National Trust. Find out more
