Garden Village Shopping Centre, Kingston Upon Hull

This shopping centre in Beech Avenue has shops, a library and flats and was built in 1909. It was designed by Runton & Barry for the Garden Village (Hull) Ltd. It is built from brick and stucco, with red brick and ashlar dressings and plain tile roofs in a Georgian style. This was one of the public buildings designed as a focus for the Garden Village development paid for by the Reckitt family on the former Holderness estate. The Reckitt family were industrialists and shared the dream of others such as the Cadburys of providing a model community for their workforce to live in, close to their place of work.
