Gatehouse to Alnwick Abbey, Denwick, Northumberland

This 14th century gatehouse is all that is left of Alnwick Abbey. The abbey was founded in 1147 by Eustace Fitz-John. It was a Premonstratensian abbey. Between 1379 and 1491, the number of resident canons rose from 17 to 22. It was famous for its relics, the foot of Simon de Montfort and the chalice of St. Thomas of Canterbury. It was closed as part of Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries in 1539.
