Gravestone, Church of St Cuthbert, Middlesbrough

The gravestone of Robert Armstrong, James Ingledew and Joseph Fenison. It is carved with 3 coffins. The rather worn epitaph records the 3 men were killed on 11th October, 1812. They died by entering a well filled with "carbonic acid gas or fixed air" and "From this unhappy accident, let others take warning not to venture into wells without first trying whether a candle will burn in them, if the candle burns to the bottom they may be entered with safety".
