Harraby Junior School, Arnside Road, Carlisle, Cumbria

A classroom at Harraby Junior School. The children are sitting at desks arranged in rows facing the teacher. This was a typical layout for a primary school in the 1950s. After the war Carlisle council started a schme for an entire new neighbourhood in the Harraby area. By September 1958 2,029 council houses were built on the New Harraby Residential Estate. Schools for Infants, Juniors and Secondary pupils were opened in the early 1950s. This photograph comes from the John Laing Company Archive.
