Harrow School, Church Hill, Harrow On The Hill, Greater London

Harrow School's Chapel from the south-west. Harrow School was founded in 1572 by a local yeoman farmer as a free grammar school for the boys of the parish of Harrow. The first building was not opened to scholars until 1611. This building still survives as the Old Schools. The chapel was built in 1854-57. It was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott in decorated Gothic and early English styles. It has knapped flint and ashlar walls. Most of the boys in the photograph are wearing Harrow's school uniform. The present uniform still includes straw hats, morning suits, top hats and canes; some of which can be seen in this Victorian photograph.
