Headstone to a miner, Pendeen Churchyard, St Just, Cornwall
Levant mine had the last surviving man-engine in the country. A series of platforms were moved up and down on rods, and by stepping between these miners were lowered and raised. On 20 October 1919 the rod collapsed killing 31 men, some of whom must have been survivors of the battlefields of the First World War.
