High Street, Burnham, Buckinghamshire

Old Swan Cottage and 38 High Street, Burnham. Mr A Payne is in business as a Fly Proprietor. A 'fly' in this case means a one horse, two wheeled, light carriage that could travel at a fast pace. People would have hired a fly to travel in; probably with a driver. Carriages and stage coaches were often based in or near pubs where travellers could get food and acommodation. Teams of horses were stabled there and changed over when the coach stopped.
