Hollinside Terrace, Lanchester, Durham

This terrace of miners' cottages is dated 1892. There were many small coal mines in county Durham with, often isolated, rows of houses provided nearby for the miners by the pit owners. There were 13 pits in the Lanchester area alone. When the pits closed the miners would lose their homes as well as their jobs. This is one of the best remaining examples of this type of housing.
