Horse gin, Ram Hill Pit, Westerleigh, Avon

Before the introduction of steam, other methods provided the power needed in mines. One or two horses could be harnessed to a gear and pulley system to lift coal. The remains of the wall surrounding the horse gin suggest that this structure from 1830 may have been roofed.
