Inspection of Ambulance Brigade, Hyde Park, Westminster, Greater London

The Inspection was carried out by Major General Sir John Duncan, Chief Commissioner. The St John Ambulance Brigade was formed in 1887, as a voluntary organisation offering free medical care. They provided medical assistance during the Boer War. Their links to assisting at sporting events began in 1908 when they helped during the London Olympics. In both World Wars St John Ambulance joined forces with the Red Cross to form the Joint War Committee, providing medical care for war casualties in hospitals in England and overseas.
