Jewel Tower and Westminster Abbey, Westminster, Greater London

This reconstruction painting by Alan Sorrell is based on the area around Old Palace Yard in the medieval period. St Dunstan founded a Benedictine Abbey here in 959. The Abbey church was originally founded by Edward the Confessor in 1050-65. The Jewel Tower, or 'King's Privy Wardrobe', was built between 1364 and 1366 as a royal treasury for Edward III. It formed the south-west corner of the former Privy Palace of Westminster. This property is now (2011) in the care of English Heritage
