Kitchen Interior, Buckinghamshire

A boy putting an item of clothing through a mangle in the kitchen of an unidentified house. The kitchen is very typical of the period. It has a large cupboard containing a drop down working surface and also a cooker with an open grill. The mangle is part of a twin tub washing machine. This had to be filled from the tap. One side had a washing machine. After the clothes had washed you had to lift them out of the hot water with large wooden tongs, feed them through the mangle and drop them into the other side which was a spin dryer. Automatic washing machines replaced twin tubs in the 1970s.
