Lamp Room, Frickley Colliery, South Elmsall, West Yorkshire

The electric lamp greatly improved pit safety, but even though it was first patented in 1859 flame lamps were still in use in the 1920s. From the 1930s it became common to locate rooms for lamp charging and storage next to the pithead baths. The basic toolkit of the miners, seen here suspended from their belts, is virtually identical to that used a century earlier.
