Lead Miners' houses, Wolfcleugh, Durham

This row of houses near to Rookhope Burn was empty and derelict when surveyed in 1987. It was used to house lead miners working high up in the hills. The heyday of lead mining in the region was the late 18th to mid 19th centuries, when the North Pennine lead field was probably the most important in the world. Relics of lead mining can be found scattered in all the `lead dales' including Weardale.
