Lewis's Department Store, Liverpool, Merseyside

David Lewis opened his first small shop on Ranelagh Street Liverpool in 1856. It expanded into a massive department store which was rebuilt after a fire in 1888. In May 1941 the building was destroyed by enemy bombing during the Blitz. A new Lewis’s store was designed in 1947 by Gerald de Courcy Fraser and built by Fraser, Sons and Geary. It was built as a steel frame with a Portland stone façade. In 1957 this statue by Jacob Epstein was added. The statue is named Liverpool Resurgent. It has carved panels below it showing scenes of childhood. The figures are modelled on the sculptor Jacob Epstein’s own children and grandchildren. They represent the younger generation which Liverpool was being rebuilt for. The statue became a famous landmark and meeting place for Liverpudlians.
