Lumford Mill, Bakewell, Derbyshire

Richard Arkwright leased this site in 1777. After sorting out difficulties over the water rights he built a cotton-spinning mill for his son Richard. By 1821 it employed 350 people, mainly women and children. It was sold to the Duke of Devonshire in 1860. The main mill buildings had to be rebuilt after a fire in 1868. The building has since been converted to offices.
