Main Kiln, Longhoughton, Northumberland

This limekiln was built in the early 1800s. By lighting fires in these kilns and adding crushed limestone, lime was produced. It was used as fertilizer in the fields. This is a well preserved example of this type of rural industry. It is also one of the largest 19th century limekilns in the country.
