Mechanics' Institute, Market Place, Thetford, Norfolk

This building was built as a Mechanics' Institute in 1887. Institutes such as this one were set up to allow working class people access to some form of education and a place where they could 'better' themselves. As compulsory education was not brought in until 1870 many working people at this time had been given little or no education.
