Mop Fair, Warwick, Warwickshire

The fairground rides at the Mop Fair. The fair dates back to the reign of Edward III (1327-77). Originally it was a hiring fair for local labourers and employers to meet in a social setting. Workers would be hired for a trial period of a week. The following weekend would be the 'Runaway Mop' fair, where either the employee or the employer could back out of any deal if they wanted to. Once all the hiring had taken place the workers could then spend their first weeks wages on the stalls and amusements at the 'Runaway Mop'.
