Mortimers Cross Water Mill, Mortimers Cross, Herefordshire

There has probably been a mill at Mortimer's Cross since the 15th century. The present mill building dates from around 1760. It was originally part of the Croft Castle Estate. It was owned by the Kevill-Davies family between 1785 and 1923. It produced paper until at least 1830. It was converted to a grain mill around 1870 and continued grinding animal feed commercially until the 1940s. The present three-storey mill building is constructed of local Aymestrey limestone with a flag floor and slate roof. The stone was quarried from a nearby quarry. It is now (2011) in the care of English Heritage. Find out more about windmills and watermills in our Teachers' Kit - Mills.
