Muchelney Abbey, Muchelney, Somerset

Muchelney Abbey lies 2 miles south of Langport and was once a landmark in the Somerset Levels. It is thought to have been first established under a foundation charter from King Cynewulf in 762. It was refounded in the late 10th century by King Athelstan as a Benedictine house dedicated to St Peter and St Paul. The abbey’s main buildings were demolished as part of the dissolution in 1538. Visitors can still see the clearly laid out foundations of the abbey, parts of the richly decorated cloister walk and the thatched monks’ lavatory - the only one of its kind in Britain. The 16th century abbots’ house remains intact. The Abbey is in the care of English Heritage (2011).
