Museum Cottage, Calverton, Nottinghamshire

This cottage was built in c1770. It is now a museum. It would originally have been used as a stocking-knitters cottage. Stocking knitting was a major industry in the village throughout the 19th and into the 20th centuries. The work was all done by people in their own homes until a factory was built in the early 20th century. Whole families, including children as young as 9, were involved in the making of stockings.
