Newgate Prison, Newgate Street, City of London, Greater London
The interior of a cell at Newgate Prison in which Elizabeth Fry read to the prisoners. Newgate is said to be built on the site of one of the gates of Roman Londinium, which was rebuilt in the 12th century. The gatehouse was refronted in 1630-1 and an engraving of 1650 labels the building as the The Metropolitan Prison of London. Demolition of the prison began in 1902 and the first stone of the new Central Criminal Court was laid in 1902. The new court opened on 27th February 1907.
