Newgate Prison, Newgate Street, City of London, Greater London

The interior of Newgate Prison showing the galleries in the "new part" of the prison. The foundation stone of the new prison was laid on 31st May 1770. The whole prison was complete by 1780. The last parts of the old prison were removed in 1781. Demolition of the prison begain in 1902 and the first stone of the new Central Criminal Court was laid in 1902. The new court opened on 27th February 1907.
