Old Wardour Castle, Donhead St Andrew, Wiltshire
An aerial view reconstructon drawing of the castle. In 1393 a licence to crenellate was granted to a John, 5th Lord Lovel of Titchmarsh. He built an hexagonal castle within a bailey. The castle was then 'modernised' in the 1570s ( Tudor period) for Sir Matthew Arundell. The castle was partly destroyed during Civil War sieges in 1643 and 1644. It was replaced 1770-1776 when the 8th Lord Arundell built a 'new' Wardour Castle, the largest Georgian house in Wiltshire. The old castle bailey was also laid out as pleasure gardens. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2010).
