Outer Breakwater, HM Naval Base, Portland

This breakwater was completed in 1872. It was probably designed by J.M. Rendel who was the engineer to the corresponding Inner Breakwater. The outer one runs North/South. It has a total length of 1820 m and it ends at Breakwater Fort. The outer, seaward face is strewn with heavy boulders and the inner face, towards the harbour, has some squared and coursed masonry. At the south end it protects the South Ship Channel.
