Peasant's House, Wharram Percy, North Yorkshire

A reconstuction drawing showing a Peasant's House in the Thirteenth to Fifteenth centuries. The village of Wharram Percy was intensively excavated and researched by Professor M Beresford and Dr J Hurst from 1952-92. They found the remains of 30 crofts and tofts (houses with a strip of land) with associated outbuildings. They are laid out along three main trackways. Thirty houses were mentioned in 1368, 16 in 1458 and the occupants of the last 4 households were evicted before 1517 to make way for sheep pasture. This drawing shows what life inside one of these homes might have looked like. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2011). Read detailed archaeological description.
