Priory Cottage, Steventon, Oxfordshire

This cottages is built on the site of a former Benedictine priory. It was founded in the reign of Henry I (1100-35). It was what is known as an 'alien' priory. This is because it was linked to a church outside England. It was dependent upon St Marie de Prato church in Italy. The priory was eventually granted to Westminster Abbey in 1399.
