Ravensworth Castle, Ravensworth, North Yorkshire
This castle was originally a rectangular walled and moated enclosure. It was the stronghold of the Fitz-Hughs. In 1201 it was visited by King John. In 1467 a chapel dedicated to St John the Apostle, was founded as a chantry. These ruins are the remains of a 14th century gatehouse, two towers and parts of the moat. The castle was largely demolished by 1616. A park wall that was built around the medieval hunting park (the castle's grounds) still survives almost intact. It was built by licence in 1391.
