Retort house, Gasferry Road, Bristol

This former Retort House was built in c1840, for the Bristol and Clifton Oil Gas Company. The Bristol and Clifton Oil Gas Co was established on the site in 1823. Coal was heated in enclosed horizontal ovens known as retorts and the gas given off. The retorts had to be filled or ‘charged’ with coal by hand which was hard, back-breaking work.
