River Mersey, Liverpool, Merseyside

The SS America on the Mersey with tugboats alongside. Ships can only enter the Mersey at high tide and have to anchor off The Bar until they can be guided in by tugs. The Liverpool skyline beyond looks very different from today. St Nicholas's Church can be clearly seen and the floating landing stage. The three large and impressive buildings that came to dominate the Pier Head area (Liver Buildings, Cunard Buildings and Port of Liverpool Building) were built some years after this photograph was taken.
