Rowton Villas (former workhouse), Skirlaugh, East Yorkshire

Rowton Villas was built in 1838 by John and William Atkinson. Following the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834 workhouses gave food and shelter to the able-bodied in return for work that was more arduous and unpleasant than that available outside the workhouse.
