A view of Chelsea Hospital from the east with an obelisk in the foreground. The hospital was founded in response to a growing need for the recognition and care of poor, sick and disabled soldiers. The obelisk was errected in 1853 in memory of the men who died at Chilianwalla in 1849. The hospital was built between 1682 and 1692 by Sir Christopher Wren.
