This school dates back to 1777 and was originally built to educate poor children. A date on a stone in the school has inscribed: "This free school was founded and endowed by William Martin Esq. Formerly Lord of the Manor of Netteswellbury. For the education of 20 poor children. And was erected by the Trustees appointed by his will in the year of our Lord 1777".
