Scotsgate, Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland

This gateway is part of the Elizabethan defences that were built around the town. It has steps leading up to the town wall. It was altered in 1815 and again in 1858. The Elizabethan fortifications are unique in Britain. They were begun in c1555 and built to the latest Italian designs.
