Shoreham Cement Works, Shoreham, West Sussex

A conical hopper is being built for the cement works at Shoreham. The workmen are building scaffolding so that the next section of the hopper can be built. The three workmen show the scale of the hopper even before it is finished. It is clear that health and safety standards have changed since this image was taken as they are not even wearing hard hats. Shoreham Cement Works was completely rebuilt from 1948 to 1950 and closed in 1991. The photograph is taken from the John Laing Collection.
