South Wingfield Manor House, Garner Lane, South Wingfield, Derbyshire
South Wingfield Manor House was a fortified manor house built between 1439-53 by Ralph, Lord Cromwell. He was Lord Treasurer between 1433 and 1443. After Cromwell's death the manor was sold to the Earl of Shrewsbury. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here during the reign of Elizabeth I when it was still in the ownership of that family. After the Restoration the astronomer, Immanuel Halton, created a new house in the shell of the Great Hall.
