Staithes, North Yorkshire

A young girl drawing water from a Victorian pump in front of cottages in Staithes. Many houses in poorer districts did not have their own water supply at this time. This photograph is one of a series taken by Thomas Watson. They were used by the Victoria County History to illustrate the ‘History of the County of York North Riding: Volume 2’, published in 1923.
