Stockton & Darlington Railway Carriage Works, Hopetown Lane, Darlington

These workshops were built around 1853 for the Stockton & Darlington Railway Company. The company was formed in 1821 by Edward Pease and a group of Darlington businessmen. The Stockton & Darlington Railroad was the very first railway line and opened on 27th September, 1825. George Stephenson was the engineer. It carried passengers between the 2 towns and coal from local collieries. This led to the town expanding and to a large locomotive works opening.
