The Athenaeum, Lynn Street, Hartlepool

The Literary and Mechanics Institute dates from 1851. It was designed by R.H. Robson who was the land agent to the West Hartlepool Dock Co. Institutes like this provided working men with social events and opportunities to improve their education. In the 1980s the building had a nightclub on the first floor and shop units below.
