The Castle, Castle Hill Road, Alton, Staffordshire

A castle has been in existence here since 1176. The castle was originally for a Knight of William the Conqueror, Bertram de Verdun. The castle is situated on a hill overlooking the Churnet Valley. It was protected to the north by a precipitous cliff and to the south by a rock-cut ditch and curtain wall. There are still some remains of the original 12th century castle.
