The Great Gatehouse, College Green, Bristol

This late 15th century gatehouse is built around two 12th century archways. The archways were built for the Augustinian abbey founded in 1140. One of the archways was for carriages and one for pedestrians. The archways originally had doors and would have kept the monks separate from visitors and travellers. The gatehouse was restored and extended in the mid 19th century.
